Gospel Singer,Sammie Okposo dead at 51


Sad news in the music industry as Nigerian Gospel singer, Sammie Okposo died on Friday. He was just 51.

According to reports, he slumped while he was being treated for exhaustion.
His colleague, Righteousman confirmed the news and called it ‘tragic’ adding that the singer had also collapsed last week upon his return from his praise party concert in the UK and was being treated for exhaustion before he eventually slumped.

“We should learn to take time to rest, Sammie Okposo was always working. I will personally miss him. He was a great singer who influenced a lot of young Nigerian gospel singers. I know how much I love his music. He served God and not man,” Righteousman said.

Sammie Okposo is popularly known for his track ‘Welu Welu’

Okposo started his music career in 1992 as a soundtrack producer for Nollywood before becoming the CEO of Zamar Entertainment. Later, he established the Sammie Okposo Praise Party, a venue through which he mentored up-and-coming gospel musicians. In 2004, he issued his debut record, Addicted. “Welu Welu,” a traditional song he pidginized, “Naija Praise,” “Jump and Shout,” and “Jehovah Idi Ebube” are some of his timeless melodies.

The Statement, his most recent album, was produced by Grammy-winning Kevin Bond in 2018.
