Chapter Thirty :The Fifth And The Last Child {Cont’d}

What Nina
didn
t know is that Uju dates sugar
daddy and she hardly focus in school. Nina doesn
t even notice Uju is not in school. The only time she
sees Uju in school is during exams with stories about being sick or her dad
being sick or she had an accident or family business to attend to. At least
that
s what she tells Zino so
she can cover up for her in school…

After
school Nina went to the hostel and saw Vivian with her fellow biochemist friend
Vivian: hey mandie!
Nina: hi!
Vivian: how are you doing?
Meet my friend Stephanie.
Nina: hi.im Amanda.
Stephanie: nice to meet
you.
Nina: you too. I think this
is the first time I
m seeing you in the hostel, Vivian.
Vivian: this is the first
time I
m seeing you as well.
Nina: thats not true.
Vivian: you are never
around that
s why you dont see me.
Nina: really?
Stephanie: I dont see you in the hostel
either.
Vivian: yeah.
Nina: okay, you win and as
for you Stephanie, I don
t see you either.
Stephanie: at least I agree
I
m not always in the hostel.
Nina: okay then.
Stephanie 🙁 holding vivians arm) Vivian, lets go and rent that movie
before someone else does.
Nina: movie?
Vivian: yeah, for the
common room.
Nina: oh you guys rent film
for hostel girls?
Stephanie: anyone can. The
hostel is boring as usual so I want to watch a movie.
Nina: okay, you guys should
go ahead.
Vivian: you are invited to
the common room anytime.
Nina: thank you, I just
forget sometimes that there
s a common room.
Stephanie: alright, bye.
Nina: bye.
Nina went
upstairs to her room and decided to take a nap since people weren
t many and the room wasnt noisy. After three hours
she woke up and her phone (Maureen
s old phone) fell into her bunkmate soaked panties under their bunk
Nina 🙁 Thinking her phone
just fell on the floor) oh my God! (Bringing out the phone from the bucket)
Nneka, these panties have been here for almost two weeks.
Nneka: oh sorry, I forgot.
Nina: this is what Im saying, all these things
you soak under the bunk, apart from my phone spoiling, it can attract flies.
Kaycee: Amanda let me see
your phone.
Nina 🙁 gives it to Kaycee)
just look at it.
Kaycee: uh, sorry. This
phone you
ve been managing. Dont worry Ill open the case and put in on the sun.
Nina: really, is it going
to work?
Kaycee: maybe.
Ebere: Nneka seriously, you
need to wash your underwear. I
m just imagining if it were my phone.
Nina: when I talk it will
look as if I just enjoy talking.
Nneka: its okay, I’ll wash it.
Nina: this is just
bullshit.
Kaycee: chill, I’ll make
sure it works.
Ebere: kaycee, the
engineer!
Kaycee: yeah I am.Amanda,
don
t worry Ill fix it for you.
Nina: yeah thanks, excuse
me.
Nina was
really pissed off because she didn
t know how she would get another phone now. She borrowed the phone from
Maureen and there
s no way shed give her back her phone
spoilt, which means she has to take it to someone that can fix it. And that
s money we are talking about;
when she could have used the money she would use to fix it to buy another
phone. Money she doesn
t even have in the first
place
Nina 🙁 went to chizobas room but didnt see her and decided to go
to Chidera
s room) hi.
Chidera: hi.
Nina: how are you doing?
Chidera: Im good.
Nina: did I see you in school today?
Chidera: I did, I saw you
with your very dark friend and the big one.
Nina: oh, Zino and Uju. Um
Uju is not exactly my friend, she
s Zinos friend.
Chidera: oh, what about
that smallish one?
Nina: Onome? We all knew
each other during our pre-science days.
Chidera: oh, Uju attended
pre-science?
Nina: yes, she did.
Chidera: okay,what have you
been up to?
Nina: um nothing special.my
phone just got spoilt.
Chidera: how?
Nina: it fell inside a
bucket of water.
Chidera: no way!
Nina: yes way.
Chidera: wow, who kept a
bucket of water there?
Nina: its actually my bunkmates soaked underwear.
Chidera: terrible.
Nina: she actually soaked
that thing for days.
Chidera: why now?
Nina: shes just so dirty, Im sick of that room. I just
can
t wait for second semester
to be over.
Chidera: is not that bad is
it?
Nina: I hope it doesnt get worse. Can I use your
phone?
Chidera: I dont have credit in my phone.
Nina: but you have enough
to flash right?
Chidera: yeah.
Nina: thanks, I want to
buzz someone.
Nina
buzzed her sister and anytime she does her sister Antonia she always calls back.
She was trying to call back but Chidera
s number was busy
Nina: here, you have a
call.
Chidera: Okay, let me have
it.
Chidera was making her call
while Antonia was calling so she was on call waiting. After her call she handed
the phone over to Nina…
Chidera: here, your number
has been on waiting.
Nina: okay, shell call back.
Chidera: is she your
sister?
Nina: yes, my elder sister.
Chidera: okay.
Nina: oh shes calling back. Hello!
Antonia: babe, how are you?
Nina: Im not okay oh!
Antonia: why?
Nina: my phone or will I
say borrowed phone fell inside water.
Antonia: how come?
Nina: it fell from my bunk
into my roommate
s bucket of soaked underwear.
Antonia: ew! So what do you
want to do now?
Nina: I dont know. I guess to fix it
for the owner.
Antonia: why were you that
careless?
Nina: its not my fault; I didnt have anywhere else to
keep the phone except on my bed.
Antonia: okay, I’ll send
money to for you to fix it.
Nina: thanks.
Antonia: but not now oh!
Nina: no problem, whenever
you are ready.
Nina wasnt expecting her sister to
do anything about it but since they are very close, if she has any issue
whatsoever, she
s the only one she can talk
to because she looks up to her and they are best friends
Antonia: okay, let me get
back to work. How is Richard?
Nina: he is fine.
Antonia: okay send my
regards. You guys should take care.
Nina: you too, bye.
Antonia: bye.
Chidera: looks like you and
your sister are really close?
Nina: yeah we are. How did
you know?
Chidera: the way you guys
were talking I could tell. I didn
t hear what she was saying but I can tell you guys are close.
Nina: how about you,any
elder sibling?
Chidera: None, Im the first child.
Nina: Oh, how many younger
ones?
Chidera: three.
Nina: okay, thanks for your
phone.
Chidera: anytime, So how
about you? How many are you guys in your family?
Nina
tries to avoid this question, if not she will have to discuss how her dad got
another woman pregnant twice; since they were not legally married and how her
mother abandoned her at the age of three and all that drama. Since her cousin
Daniel advised her not to start telling people she
s from a broken home, she
just told her they are seven including her step brothers
Nina: seven.
Chidera: wow! Your mom
really tried.
Nina: yeah, she did.
Chidera: what position are
you?
Nina: fifth.
Chidera: wow! That means
you have elder ones that are probablythrough with school or about to graduate.
Nina: they are not that
older than me. Actually one will soon be graduating and two are in year two.
Chidera: wow, your dad is
really trying. What of the one before you?
Nina: oh Richard? Hes here with me.
Chidera: you have a brother
in this school?
Nina: yes, I thought you
knew.
Chidera: no I didnt.
Nina: hes in engineering,
electrical.
Chidera: okay, wow! Your
dad is really doing a good job.
Nina: yeah, I guess hes trying.
Chidera: are you kidding
me? It’s not easy to take care of a child expenses in the university talk more
of four people if not five.
Nina: true.
Chidera: anyways. When he
will enjoy it is when you guys graduate.
Nina: yeah.
Their dad
was trying but he discovered taking them to the university late that
s why hes rushing them. That was
the period he didn
t have much money, he was
just borrowing money from one person to the other and when some people realized
he
s using the money to train
he
s children in school, they
stopped lending him. So sometimes their sister assist their dad, sometimes Nina
won
t have common fifty naira
in her pocket but right from time she has always been a good girl and she didn
t let people influence her
wrongly. She was really broke most times even Richard but she has never been
the type that depends on men for money talk more of sugar daddy
s except for her dad
because that
s hes responsibility
